Search and Rescue

New Jersey Wing Civil Air Patrol is tasked with aeronautical search and rescue for the State of New Jersey. The Air Force Rescue Coordination Center alerts Civil Air Patrol for all lost aircraft searches, and many lost person searches in New Jersey.

Search resources consist of five CAP owned aircraft and approximately ten member owned aircraft available for search, along with crews consisting of a pilot, observer and scanner. New Jersey Wing also fields highly trained Ground Search and Rescue teams consisting of both cadets and senior members. The search effort is managed by one of eleven "Search Mission Coordinators" and their staffs from one of the mission bases that have been set up at five New Jersey airports. It is supported by a network of CAP radio repeaters and search vehicles deployed over the State.

Disaster Relief

New Jersey Wing Civil Air Patrol performs Disaster Relief missions under the "Air Force National Security Emergency Preparedness Office" and under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The Wing may also be activated under memorandums of understanding with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the State of New Jersey, several Counties and the American Red Cross.

New Jersey Wing has provided support for damage assessment, communications, evacuation, manning of Emergency Operations Center facilities, air traffic control, transport of urgent supplies, disaster site surveillance, crowd control and shelter management. New Jersey Wing has assisted in a variety of disasters from the Midwest Floods, to the Edison gas explosion, to winter storms, North Jersey flooding and severe windstorms  in Burlington County.

Training Opportunities

CAP Training

The New Jersey Wing Emergency Services Academy provides several  one day and resident programs.

There are additional training programs

The New Jersey State Police provide many training programs in Emergency Services

FEMA's Emergency Management Institute in Emmitsburg, MD provides independent study and residence schools available to CAP members

Many of the above courses are eligible for undergraduate college credit.

Mission Management Utilities System

New Jersey Wing uses the popular "Mission Management Utilities (MMU)" for mission management. This program is available for download. There is also a powerpoint based training program available.  This program comes with only a sample database.  Those who need the New Jersey database (commanders, incident commanders, etc.) should go to the WMU application, select 'ES Staff' menu item, then select 'Download Wing Database', then click 'Create and download current MMU ....' and follow the prompts. You must have an ES appointment on the unit staff assignment page in WMU to do the download.ES Management Utilities Open Screen
