Dates to Remember
ES Department Staff
LtCol. HarlanCobert (cobertco@exit109.com) has transferred to NJ Wing's ES staff. He comes to New Jersey from National Capitol Wing with extensive Emergency Services experience both in air and ground areas. He has many thousands of hours as a pilot, and was a former Cadet. He will be researching and optimizing our alerting procedures as well as joining our operational effort as a much needed Mission Coordinator.
Training
Spring GSAR School
Plans are well underway for the Spring GSAR school. 1st Lt Bill Strupczewski (sargod@usa.net) will be project officer for this premier opportunity for both seniors and cadets to train for Ground Team Member. The entire school will be held in the field at Fort Dix, with a program which will be promoted as the model for a national GSAR curriculum.
Costs are $95 per student to cover meals and course materials, patches, t-shirt and cap. Applcations on NJWESA form 54 are due by March 2 for students and Feb 2 for staff.
Unit Training
The GSAR for Community Responder's course developed by LtCol Nick Boyko (Nboyko@pica.army.mil) is doing well with classes scheduled for the new CAP ES Training Center at Picatinny Arselan and at the Cherry Hill Armory in south Jersey. This NJ Department of Health approved course is designed for Squadrons to make connections in the local community responder community, provide needed training for EMT, Fire and Police responders in your community. It also is a great fundraiser for squadrons, as it can generate substantial funds with one weekend's work.
New SAREX Plans
In order to bring training closer to home, the training SAREX'es this year will be managed and planned at GROUP level. This will allow each group to concentrate on those skills recognized locally as most desired. Each group can request participation and assistance from other groups and wing staff.
To make training at the SAREX'es especially interesting, there will be a SAR COMPETITION at the end of May. The groups will compete for trophies in each of the SAR specialties.
Regulation Supplement
New Jersey Wing has issued a supplement to CAPR 55-1, which has been transmitted to National HQ for registration. It specifies limitations on knife carrying while in uniform, proper procedures for blue lights, and alerting procedures. Request copies through the NJW Administration department.
SAR Insignia
The ES Academy bookstore can supply a variety of items for wear on the BDU uniform, including the GSAR and Tracker patches. Additionally, the old ES patch is in stock. (Red White and blue with T-34)

Summary and Director's Comments
New Jersey Wing has had an excellent 1997, with growth in ES Ratings - both quantitatively, and qualitatively. Members now realize that a CAPF-101 card means real qualifications, both in terms of meeting training requirements, but also in terms of currency.
We have had fewer search missions this year than previously, but we performed them with greater efficiency. One mission NJ Wing actually found three ELT/EPIRBS!
I am looking forward to 1998 as an even better year, because you members are starting with a great base of skills, and a serious attitude toward our ES mission.
Good fortune to you in the New Year, and may your Holidays be safe, healthy, and happy. May Santa bring you that Cessna 206 or 4X4 you wanted.
Happy Holidays from
