The communications department of New Jersey Wing is responsible for developing and maintaining a system of communications for use by CAP members to execute the CAP missions. Both cadet and senior members may be licensed as CAP radio operators.
This is accomplished through a training program to prepare members as effective communicators. The hardware includes a system of VHF radio repeaters, shortwave radio stations and digital computer communications over wire and radio.
Completion of the first phase of training results in the Radio Operator's Authorization - Basic, and the second, more complete training phase results in the Radio Operator's Authorization - Advanced.
In addition, there is a senior training program devoted to communications management, and an emergency services advanced specialty track for qualification as a Mission Base Radio Operator, and as a Communications Unit Leader.
